The British Society for Population Studies (BSPS) are holding two workshops regarding the ONS Changes to Mid Year Estimates. One event is at the University of Leeds, and one is at the Local Government Association (LGA) in London. The workshops will take place in Leeds on the 7th of January and in London on the 11th of January 2010.

The meetings will be looking at the revisions proposed by ONS to the Mid Year Estimate series from Mid 2002 to Mid 2008. The latest changes revise methodology for the distribution of International migrants between local areas and include new data on Students to enhance moves within the UK. These meetings will give Local Authorities the chance to compare findings, assess the changes and receive some feedback from the ONS IMPS team.

If you would like to contribute to the events by giving a short (10 minute) presentation as part of Session 2, and get instant feedback from the ONS IMPS team, please let the BSPS Secretariat know when you register for the event.

The Joanna Stillwell Prize for Population Geography Dissertations

The Population Geography Research Group (PopGRG) of the RGS-IBG has set up three prizes (£100 for 1st; £50 for 2nd; £25 for 3rd) to be awarded for the best undergraduate dissertations of 2009 in the broad field of Population Geography. 

Would you or your colleagues like to nominate a dissertation from your institution?  If so, please send a copy of the dissertations to me by the end of July this year (2009).  Please note that for practical purposes we can only accept one dissertation from any institution and to be eligible that institution has to be in the UK.

The prize is named in memory of the daughter of Professor John Stillwell of the University of Leeds. Joanna who was a geography graduate from the University of Sheffield died in 2004.

2011 Census research: new data, linkage and outputs

This one-day conference showcases the work of nine research projects funded during 2008-09 by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). These have focused on developments in 2011 census data products, innovations in census data linkage through time and emerging web-based technologies for census data dissemination. The day is intended to inform debate concerning future research priorities surrounding the delivery of data from the 2011 UK censuses and the requirements of contemporary census research users.
